The Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy colloquium series is hosting Kamaludeen Mohamed Nasir, Fulbright visiting professor at UCLA, for a discussion on hip-hop and Islam on Wednesday, April 18 in room B544 in Schoenberg Hall.
The presentation, which will start at 1:15 p.m., examines the different trajectories of Muslim hip-hop culture in East Asia. The genre, which initially comes as a challenge to religious authorities and the state, has developed from a stigmatized art form to one that has been co-opted by grassroots organizations and government ministries.
Nasir is also an associate professor of sociology at the Nanyang Technological University Singapore and the director of peace studies at the United Nations Association of Singapore.
