April 28-29: Concerts honoring Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Department of Ethnomusicology and the Friends of Jazz at UCLA are honoring Duke Ellington and the music of Ellingtonia and Billy Strayhorn’s 100th year anniversary with two free concerts on April 28 and 29.

The first concert, to be held in the Schoenberg Auditorium from 3 p.m. to 7p.m., will present jazz combos directed by Kenny Burrell, Clayton Cameron, Charles Owens, Michele Weir, the UCLA Jazz Orchestra directed by Charley Harrison, and Bobby Rodriguez.

The second night, marking Ellington’s birthday, will be held in the Schoenberg Orchestra Room 1343 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The performance will feature the UCLA Ellingtonia Orchestra, directed by Kenny Burrell, and the UCLA Charles Mingus Ensemble, directed by Justo Almario. Seating will be limited.
