UCLA’s Meteorite Gallery lecture series will be presenting a free event titled “Before They Were Meteorites: The Discovery and Characterization of Near-Earth Asteroids” on Sunday, Aug 25. The lecture will be held in the Geology Building, room 3656 and will run from 2 to 4 p.m.
Near-Earth asteroids are objects capable of impacting Earth. A collision with a large asteroid could pose a threat to all terrestrial life. Because of this, NASA has undertaken surveys of the sky to search for these near-Earth asteroids. The lecture, free and open to all, will center on NASA’s study of these objects using new technology. It will be presented by Joe Masiero of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
