Sriram Kosuri, UCLA assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, today was named a 2015 Searle Scholar, which recognizes 15 exceptional young scientists who have “already demonstrated innovative research and were selected due to their potential for making significant contributions to chemical and biological research,” according to the Searle Scholars program.
Kosuri, who holds the Linda and Fred Wudl Term Chair, develops and leverages new technologies in DNA synthesis, DNA sequencing and genome engineering to make the understanding and engineering of biological systems faster and simpler. The laboratory will use this new funding to accelerate the researchers’ efforts to study how combinations of short regulatory elements define the complex logic of regulated gene expression.
“Each of these bold and talented young scientists has opened up novel approaches to answer fundamental questions in biology and the biomedical sciences,” said Dr. Doug Fambrough, scientific director of the Searle Scholars program.
The Searle Scholars program received 186 applications from recently appointed assistant professors nominated by 126 universities and research institutions.
