Efforts by Christine Littleton, UCLA vice provost of diversity and faculty development and professor of law and gender studies, and Susan Drange Lee, director of diversity and faculty development, to develop and implement family-friendly programs and policies at UCLA are highlighted in a new book by the Association for Women in Science.
“Equitable Solutions for Retaining a Robust STEM Workforce: Beyond Best Practices” features 12 case studies that consider work/life integration and satisfaction issues faced by those in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.
The book was developed as a result of the largest global survey ever undertaken about work/life integration issues among scientists. The survey’s findings raised serious concerns about retaining the necessary level of scientific talent required to sustain innovation. The data showed that key factors including lack of flexibility in the workplace, dissatisfaction with career development opportunities and low salaries, are driving many researchers of both genders to reconsider their profession.
The Office of Diversity and Faculty Development provides academic leadership for achieving and sustaining faculty diversity as an indispensable element of UCLA's academic excellence. The office aims to create a welcoming and inclusive environment through education, communication and collaboration with UCLA faculty and administrators on all aspects of faculty diversity.
