Kai-Wei Chang, assistant professor of computer science in the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, is a recipient of the 2018 Okawa Research Grant for his work to reduce implicit bias in artificial intelligence systems.
The grant is for $10,000. The Okawa Foundation’s mission is to promote and seek development in information and communications technology through awards and research grants, and to further international academic and cultural exchanges in this area. The awards will be presented to grant recipients on Sept. 13 in San Francisco.
Chang’s research goal is to build intelligence systems that solve real-world problems by automatically acquiring knowledge. He is the recipient of the 2017 EMNLP Best Long Paper Award for work on reducing gender bias.
