Melnitz Movies screens Terrence Malick’s stunningly photographed “Days of Heaven” screens today, Monday, June 2, 7:30 p.m. at the James Bridges Theater.

“Days of Heaven,” Malick’s period tragedy, features Oscar-winning cinematography by Nestor Almendros, standing out among Malick’s many visually arresting films of the 20th Century.

The story, which begins in 1910, follows Chicago steelworker (Richard Gere) who accidentally kills his supervisor and flees with his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) and his sister (Linda Manz) to the Texas panhandle, where they find work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer (Sam Shepard). A love triangle, a swarm of locusts, a hellish fire — Malick captures it all with dreamlike authenticity, creating a timeless American idyll that is also a gritty evocation of turn-of-the-century labor.

The event is free, but an RSVP is required. To register for tickets, visit Eventbrite.
