The U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training Thursday heard Charles Alexander, UCLA associate vice provost for student diversity, testify about the success of the Academic Advancement Program (AAP) at helping students excel academically and graduate on time.
The hearing was focused on strengthening America’s higher education system. The UCLA program, which Alexander directs, represents approximately 23 percent of the UCLA undergraduate student body. AAP’s work with transfer students has resulted in a dramatic increase in their four-year graduation rates — from 61 percent 15 years ago to 83 percent today. In the same time period, African-American rates rose from 45 percent to 83 percent, and Latino rates rose from 66 percent to 83 percent.
