The Hammer Museum and KCRW-89.9FM celebrate summer with the free concert series “Summer of Soul” beginning at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 9, in the courtyard of the museum. The series continues to run every Thursday night through the month of July.
The series presents four free nights of live music that shine a light on the timeless power of soul music with a diverse line-up of talented musical acts, starting with the Los Angeles-based ensemble Breakestra, which the Hammer describes as “based in deep funk, good ol’ hip hop breaks and psychedelic soul-jazz fever. A Breakestra show is about dancing and getting your wig flipped back by a non-stop throwdown of eight folks on stage getting loose and flexing some soulful skills over some serious funk grooves both original and deeper covers drawn from the vault of Miles music’s vast vault of funk. Think James Brown, the Meters, early Kool and the Gang, Funkadelic, and Sly and the Family Stone mixed in a gumbo pot of non-stop funk. Watching the Breakestra live is a tour de force.”
Every night will kick off with a happy hour cash bar at 6:30 p.m. and music sets from a KCRW DJ, followed by live music at 7:30 p.m. The museum’s hours have been extended to 9 p.m. so that guests can also enjoy the Hammer exhibitions.
