An exhibition of works by painter Joseph Holtzman opens on June 6 at UCLA's Hammer Museum.

Holtzman's work — created on polished slate or marble to which he applies thin layers of oil paints —  consists mainly of abstract portraits of both cultural and historical figures, among them Jane Austen, Mary Todd Lincoln, Stephen Sondheim and Holtzman's friends and family.

The exhibition, which runs through Sept. 20, will have a site-specific environment created by Holtzman. Find more information at the Hammer Museum.
