Join the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden as it celebrates its new La Kretz Entrance on Monday, June 2, noon. Enjoy live music by the UCLA Bruin Marching Band, refreshments in the Garden Plaza and a self-guided or docent-guided garden tour.
The seven-acre botanical garden's new entrance, located at at the corner of Tiverton Avenue and Charles E. Young Drive, is the first in a series of renovations made possible through a gift from Morton La Kretz, a UCLA alumnus, philanthropist and environmental champion.
Created in 1929, UCLA's botanical garden is home to 5,000 plant species, including many that cannot be found anywhere else in California. Among its offerings are notable collections of tropical and subtropical trees, Australian plants, conifers and Hawaiian species, as well as salamanders, turtles, lizards and koi. The garden serves an important role for the university, both for conservation and as an outdoor laboratory for courses in botany, ecology, evolution and biogeography. It is also open to residents of Los Angeles and visitors from around the world.
