UCLA's Fowler Museum will screen "Narco Cultura," a documentary about folk saints and the drug war, on Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m.
Contemporary Mexican folk saints Jesús Malverde and Santa Muerte have been figures co-opted as “Narco Saints,” patrons of illegal acts. In Shaul Schwarz’s 2013 film, these saints are the backdrop to the development of narcocorridos (drug ballads) in the U.S. and Mexico. The documentary features powerful footage from the front lines of the drug wars and performances from some of the most popular Narcocorrido artists, including El Komander and Buknas de Culiacán. The film is rated R.
This screening is free and open to the public. Find more information at the Fowler Museum.
