Sankai Juku, the acclaimed Japanese company, performs 'Umusuna: Memories Before History' at UCLA's Royce Hall on Oct. 16 and 17 at 8 p.m., presented by the Center for the Art of Performance (CAPS) at UCLA.
Founded in 1975 by Ushio Amagatsu, who has become one of the premiere choreographers in the world today, Sankai Juku is known around the globe for its elegance, refinement, technical precision and emotional depth.
CAPS describes Amagatsu's contemporary Butoh creations as “sublime visual spectacles and deeply moving theatrical experiences.” His latest, “Umusuna,” focuses on duality and unity, with its name coming from a combination of the Japanese characters for “birth” and “earth.”
