The Charles E. Young Research Library will host a screening of the documentary “Paywall: The Business of Scholarship” on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The documentary focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers and examines the 35 to 40 percent profit margin associated with the leading academic publisher Elsevier, which in many years is greater than those of tech companies like Apple and Google.
The screening will take place in the main conference room and will be followed by a discussion moderated by scholarly communication librarians Marty Brennan and Jennifer Chan. There will be free popcorn, and attendees are welcome to bring their lunch. Admission is free, and no reservations are required.
