Join KCRW for the 8th annual "Good Food" Pie Contest on Sunday, Oct. 2 on UCLA's Royce Quad, between Royce Hall and Powell Library.
Starting at 11 a.m., join in the fun – including sampling from the hundreds of pies – while home cooks and baking professionals compete side-by-side to win over the tastebuds of notable Los Angeles chefs and food writers. This year, top honors will be given to the best pies in these categories: fruit, nut, cooked custard, cream/chiffon/mousse, sweet potato, savory, vegan and Cuban – the last category inspired by the Fowler Museum’s new exhibit, "Nkame: a retrospective of Cuban printmaker Belkis Ayón."
The event is free and open to all. KCRW "Good Food" host Evan Kleiman will preside over the festivities, including music, food trucks, cookbook swap, activities for kids, an artisan marketplace and, of course, all that pie-sampling.
For more fun, head down Janss Steps and visit the Fowler Museum to see the new exhibit and enjoy some family fun. From 12-3 p.m., kids can make their own placemats using techniques inspired by Cuban printmaker Ayón. At 2 p.m., guest curator Christa Vives and Ayón’s sister and director of the Estate of Belkis Ayón, Dr. Katia Ayón, will share insights into the artists' influence on contemporary Cuban printmaking.
