A fusion of jazz and Indian classical music by percussionist Zakir Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan and legendary British bass player Dave Holland comes to Royce Hall at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Joining them will be Louiz Banks, the standard-bearer of India’s jazz movement, and internationally renowned composer-performer Amit Chatterjee.
Hussain is a classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, gaining him fame in his native India and on a global scale as well. His most recent collaboration explores the longstanding relationship between jazz and Indian classical music. Mahadevan, recognized for compositions that have been featured in many Indian films, is the founder of the Shankar Mahadevan Academy to make learning all styles of Indian music easy and accessible to people worldwide.
Holland has led nearly a five-decade career as both a bassist and composer. His trademarks as a composer include folk song-like motives, asymmetrical rhythms and themes in two or more voices, such as the trombone and saxophone.
