Michael Dean, chair of vocal studies at UCLA and an internationally recognized bass-baritone, will perform a full concert of classic jazz and big band music for the university community on Tuesday, April 22, 8 p.m. at Schoenberg Hall. Joining him for timeless songs by Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers and others will be the Thelonious Monk Institute Ensemble, the UCLA Brass Ensemble and special guests Gary Gray and Jens Lindemann. Dean has been said to evoke the spirit of the great swing era vocalists like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan and Nat King Cole, and when performing both with an intimate jazz combo and with the thrilling sounds of a big band, Dean makes the swinging music accessible and fun for all ages. Tickets are $11 for UCLA faculty, staff and students with identification; $14 general admission. For more information, visit UCLA Happenings.
