One of the 2017-2018 Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Awards honoring emeriti professors in the University of California system has been awarded to Henry Ansgar Kelly, professor emeritus of English at UCLA.
Kelly, who retired from UCLA in 2004, but has continued to contribute to the campus since that time, is the 40th person to receive the award. The late Dr. Panunzio, a professor of sociology at UCLA for many years, has been described as the architect of the UC retirement system and was particularly active in improving pensions and stipends for his fellow emeriti. The award bearing his name was established in 1983 and includes a $5,000 prize.
Kelly's scholarly contributions since retirement include six books and 37 papers on a wide range of topics. He also published studies on heresy trials, including that of Sir Thomas More, and how the English Inquisition differed from its continental counterpart. He resumed the position of editor of the journal “Viator: Medieval and Renaissance Studies” in 2003. He also directed the digitization of the 1582 edition of “Corpus Juris Canonici” (Corpus of Canon Law), which is now available online for legal and ecclesiastic scholars worldwide.
