Catherine Opie

Catherine Opie, professor of photography in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, delivered the 2017 Walter Annenberg Lecture at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City on Nov. 30.

Held annually, the lecture seeks to advance the nation’s understanding of its art and culture by honoring a significant artist’s achievements and contributions to the field. During the program, Opie discussed her career of more than 30 years as well as the importance of photography in the history of art and the history of contemporary America.

Opie’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Her portraiture and landscape photography studies relationships among factions of society, with a large emphasis on sexual identity.

Opie has also recently been brought named to the board of directors for the Mike Kelly Foundation, which funds projects in the arts and supports artist Mike Kelley’s legacy.
