Dr. Amar Kishan

Dr. Amar Kishan, assistant professor of radiation oncology and a member of UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, will receive the 2018 Publication Award from the Radiation Oncology Institute in recognition of his outstanding manuscript that highlighted the value of radiation therapy in the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer.

The award recognizes the best scientific work published in the past year that has had a lasting impact in the field of radiation oncology.

Kishan’s manuscript, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in March, was an analysis that compared the clinical outcomes following three different types of treatment for an aggressive form of localized prostate cancer: radical prostatectomy, external beam radiotherapy, and external beam radiotherapy with a brachytherapy boost. Kishan found that men with the disease who were treated with an external beam radiotherapy with a brachytherapy boost had a significantly improved overall long-term survival compared to the other two treatment options.

The manuscript has also garnered national attention from press and the medical community, helping to elevate the profile of radiation therapy — specifically brachytherapy — as an option for treating prostate cancer. The results of his study were also featured in the New England Journal of Medicine Journal Watch.

Along with the honor, Kishan will receive a $5,000 grant where he plans to use the funds to help expand the multi-institutional consortium and extend the investigation to the general category of high-risk prostate cancer.
