Sergei Tochitsky, research engineer in the UCLA Plasma Accelerator Group, has been elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America.

His election as fellow was announced during the society’s meeting in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 18. He has been elected “for outstanding contributions to the development of high-power picosecond CO2 lasers and their applications in nonlinear optics and laser-driven particle acceleration.”

Tochitsky co-authored a study titled “Fifteen terawatt picosecond CO2 laser system” that was published in the Optical Society of America’s journal Optics Express in 2010. He is currently working on a paper that continues his reseach with carbon dioxide laser acceleration.
