Steven P. Wallace, professor and chair of the Department of Community Health Sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, received the 2013 Betty and James E. Birren Senior Scholar Award. Given by the California Council on Gerontology and Geriatrics (CCGG) in honor of Betty and James E. Birren, the award recognizes outstanding achievements of individuals who have spent the majority of their careers working in, contributing to and promoting the fields of gerontology and/or geriatrics in California.
Wallace is a leading national scholar in the area of aging in communities of color. He has published research on access to longterm care by diverse elderly groups, disparities in the consequences of health policy changes on racial/ethnic minority elderly, and the politics of aging. His research addresses older Latinos, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian-Pacific Islander Americans and African Americans. Wallace has also published research on immigrant health for more than 20 years. His current research focuses on healthy aging among older Californians, measuring income security for older adults and studying access to care issues of Mexican immigrants.
Wallace earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, San Francisco.
