Three faculty members from the UCLA College — John Agnew, William Clark and Eric Sheppard — have been selected as fellows of the American Association of Geographers, an organization that recognizes individuals who have made contributions to geography.
Agnew, professor of geography, was honored by the association for contributing monographs on geopolitics that have challenged the community to rethink conceptions of hegemony and sovereignty. His research interests include political geography, international political economy, European urbanization and Italy. He is a fellow of the British Academy, the Royal Geographic Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Clark, research professor of geography, focuses on housing, segregation and neighborhood geography. Clark is one of few geographers ever to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Geographers in 2018.
Sheppard, Humbolt professor of geography, is committed to promoting interactions across several subfields in the discipline of geography. During his time as president of the American Association of Geographers, Sheppard was an advocate and spokesperson for all geographers across the entire profession. His interests include geographical political economy, uneven geographies of globalization, neoliberalism, urban sustainability and environmental justice.
Agnew, Clark and Sheppard are among 10 fellows from other universities who were honored by the association. As fellows, they will serve the organization by addressing key initiatives, advising strategic directions and grand challenges and mentoring early and mid-career faculty.
