Professor Alicia Gaspar de Alba of the UCLA Cesar E. Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies will discuss her new book, winner of the 2015 Book Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, today, Jan. 28, 3-5 p.m. in the Chicano Studies Research Center Library, 144 Haines Hall.
"[Un]framing the 'Bad Women' Sor Juana, Malinche, Coyolxauhqui, and Other Rebels with a Cause" (University of Texas Press, 2014) is a collection of essays in which Gaspar de Alba challenges the patriarchal and heteronormative structures that women who have challenged the stereotypes of male-dominated Latin societies. Drawing upon the narratives of the women in title of her book, she shows how they were “rebels with a cause by challenging the discourses of their time.
