The UC Office of the President has awarded a multi-campus research programs and initiatives grant of $1.07 million over four years to establish the Consortium for Black Studies in California. Principal investigator for the grant is history professor Robin Kelley, who serves as director of the consortium and is the Gary B. Nash Chair in United States History.

The consortium will be housed at UCLA, with partner sites at UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, UC Irvine and UC San Diego.

Grace Kyungwon Hong, an associate professor with joint appointments in the department of Asian American studies and the department of gender studies, wrote the grant and is one of a number of co-investigators.

Funded by the University of California Office of the President, the grant program supports innovative research projects and collaborations among faculty members across all UC campuses, in order to strengthen UC’s position as a leading public research university.

The program seeks to facilitate and support exceptional research that will lead to societal advancements in areas of vital importance, such as the environment and economy. It also aims to increase extramural funding as a means to provide faculty and graduate students at all UC campuses with the necessary tools to execute their groundbreaking ideas.
