UCLA urban planning professor Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris and architecture professor Thom Mayne will take part in Zócalo Public Square's "Will Downtown L.A. Rival the Westside?" on Tuesday Oct. 14, 7:30 p.m., at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The panel discussion will also feature L.A. restaurateur Bill Chait and Los Angeles Times arts and entertainment editor Laurie Ochoa, and will be moderated by Jennifer Medina, a national correspondent for the New York Times.

The discussion will look at how downtown L.A.  floundered during the 1980s, when the Westside the desirable L.A. locale, but re-emerged during the 1990s. Panelists will discuss how factors such as sports, concert venues and transportation have conspired to rejuvenate downtown, and what effect this rejuvenation will have on life and work in L.A.
