UCLA has partnered with Uber to provide a flat fare to all staff, faculty, alumni and students who carpool using uberPOOL near campus.

In the program, which began Feb. 1 and is effective through May 1, UCLA affiliates can request an uberPOOL for pick-up and drop-off within five miles from the center of campus, and pay a maximum of $5.99 for fares up to $15.

“This partnership between Uber and our university is the first of its kind,” said Dave Karwaski, UCLA Transportation’s senior associate director of planning, policy and traffic systems. “We recognize the need to provide our growing and ever-changing campus community with more convenient and cost-effective options to get to, from and around campus.”

As part of the pilot program, participants must register for an Uber account using a UCLA email or update their existing accounts, and enter the promotional code UCLAWINTER2018.

The $5.99 flat rate offer only applies to uberPOOL rides, which must begin and end within the qualifying area. For rides more than $15, the additional amount will be added onto the flat rate, so a $16 ride would only cost $6.99.

If the standard fare is less than $5.99, customers will be charged for the lower fare. The number of ride-hailing users on and around campus has grown considerably this past year.

“Students and employees are already using ride-hailing services to get to their destinations faster or to reach areas that are too far to walk,” Karwaski said. “Right on the heels of our Bruin Bike Share launch last fall, this flat-fare pilot program adds another layer through carpooling to further enhance mobility to and from campus, which has always been a priority for our department.”

UberPOOL is Uber’s version of carpooling. Drivers can pick up and drop off multiple riders who are heading in the same direction, and passengers share the cost of the ride. Each passenger can bring one friend (two riders total per pick-up location) for no extra charge. The $5.99 flat fare applies to all standard and surge pricing fares up to $15.
