Recognized globally as an expert in artificial cornea transplant surgery, or keratoprosthesis, UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute faculty member, professor and Walton Li chair in cornea and uveitis Dr. Anthony Aldave became the fourth surgeon in the world to implant 200 Boston keratoprotheses.

The Boston keratoprothesis is utilized to restore vision to individuals with profound vision loss who are not candidates for traditional corneal transplantation.

Aldave has traveled to more than a dozen countries in the last 11 years teaching corneal surgeons how to perform keratoprosthesis surgery, work supported by Visionaries International, a nonprofit humanitarian corporation founded by Aldave in 2007 to reduce the burden of corneal blindness in the developing world.
