Vickie Mays, professor of psychology in the UCLA College, and of health policy and management in the Fielding School of Public Health, has been reappointed by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner to a second four-year term as the House representative to the federal advisory committee of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics.
Mays chairs the working group on data access and use, which assists and advises the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on recommendations to expand access to HHS data to improve health and health care. She helped develop a report on the role of data collection in the reducing health disparities associated with race, ethnicity, and primary language.
At UCLA, Mays is director of the BRITE (Bridge Research, Education, Innovation, Training and Education) Center on Minority Health Disparities Solutions. Her research primarily focuses on the mental and physical health disparities affecting racial and ethnic minority populations. She has received a number of awards including one for her lifetime research on women and HIV from AMFAR, a Women and Leadership Award from the American Psychological Association and several Distinguished Contributions for Research awards.
