Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, Wasserman Dean of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, will deliver a keynote presentation at the International Baccalaureate conference on July 22 in Orlando, Florida. The conference will examine education through a global lens.

In his lecture, Suárez-Orozco will explore the future of education in the United States. He points out that today one in five children in America is from an immigrant-headed home. He will discuss how these children should be educated to become engaged citizens and whether they should be encouraged to assimilate or to maintain their cultural traditions.

“Globalization represents the most significant challenge to school systems since the origins of mass public education,” Suárez-Orozco said. “While these dynamics are neither new nor exceptional, the rate and the depth of global change is nevertheless novel. In the 21st century, we are all witnessing deep concern over the global economic, demographic and cultural exchanges shaping our era.”
