Jian Zhang is an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and an expert in earthquake engineering and trying to figure out ways to design buildings and structures that are better able to withstand the seismic forces of earthquakes.

Zhang’s research emphasizes modeling, analysis and protection of structural systems and the main goals of the research are to understand the seismic performance of bridges and buildings by experiments and model-based simulations. Ultimately, Zhang’s work is meant to assist in developing better seismic response models and analysis procedures and to improve structural performance and mitigate earthquake hazards.
