A professor of chemistry and biochemistry and a second-year medical student in the David Geffen School of Medicine Prime Program were selected to receive the 2013 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award by the Academic Senate.

During his career at UCLA, Professor Miguel Garcia-Garibay has mentored many undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral underrepresented minority and female students in chemistry, many of whom have gone on to hold academic positions. He founded and gets funding yearly for the Organization for Cultural Diversity in Chemistry, which brings in minority speakers. He also launched a movement to recruit undergraduates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to UCLA .

Medical student Michael Haymer is an advocate who has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of LGBTQ students, patients and community members at UCLA. As co-president of MedGLO, the LGBTQ student group at the David Geffen School of Medicine, Haymer pushed for key reforms in both medical education and the healthcare LGBTQ patients receive at UCLA.
