Businessmen donate to UCLA Blood and Platelet Center

Devoted Bruin fans Peter Heumann and Howie Neftin donated $36,000 to the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center — proceeds from the 2013 Volkswagen City of Angels Fun RideThe charity ride has raised more than $100,000 over the past three years for the center’s mobile blood donation program.
Sixteen years ago, Heumann, a mortgage broker, launched the cycling fundraiser, which is sponsored by Volkswagen of America. His buddy, Neftin, who owns Neftin Volkswagen of Thousand Oaks, donates $10,000 each year on behalf of the Southern California Volkswagen dealers association.
"Participating in this wonderful community ride and donating the funds to the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center has been a thrill for me," said Neftin. "It's a great feeling to make a difference to such a worthy cause."
Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center's mobile blood donation program collects some 22,000 units of blood a year, supplying half of the blood transfusions for patients at UCLA Health System’s hospitals. By transporting beds and equipment, the truck enables the center to staff community blood drives throughout Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
