Former gang members speak out through poetry

On June 1, 2009, the UCLA School of Public Affairs' Department of Social Welfare presented a public reading of poetry written by the poets of Homeboy Industries — one of the most widely recognized gang intervention and reentry programs in America. Agustin Lizama, Robert Juarez and Hector Verdugo, all former gang members who have transformed their lives through their association with Homeboy Industries, presented dramatic retellings of their experiences in Los Angeles gangs through their personal writings. Their poetry, edited by Los Angeles Times best-selling novelist Leslie Schwartz, appears in the edited volume "Homeboy Review."
