"Issei: The First Generation" explores the struggles of Japanese immigrants in rural California during the first half of the 20th Century. The 1983 documentary was produced by poet and filmmaker Toshi Washizu, and restored with the assistance of Professor and Aratani Endowed Chair Lane Hirabayashi of UCLA's Department of Asian American Studies. Screened by the UCLA International Institute on May 8, 2014.
