Semiconductor assembly rendering

The UCLA method (left, foreground) prevents the defects from forming by joining a thin sheet of metal (silver sphers) to the semiconductor layer (yellow) through a simple lamination process. The approach uses van der Waals forces to join the layers instead of chemical bonds. In the technique commonly used now, gaps often form because the atoms from the two layers don't join perfectly.
