New Device Removes Stroke Clots
Fox News, Britain's Daily Mail and Asian News International reported Monday, and the BBC, Science Daily and Medical Xpress reported Sunday, on a new device developed by UCLA researchers that removes blood clots from blocked brain arteries in patients experiencing ischemic stroke. Dr. Jeffrey Saver, professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of the UCLA Stroke Center, was quoted in the coverage.
 
Prof Leads 'Daredevil Spacecraft' Mission
UCLA's Christopher T. Russell, a professor in the UCLA Department of Earth and Space Sciences and principal investigator for NASA's Dawn mission, is featured in an article in the September issue of Discover magazine about the mission and its journeys to the protoplanet Vesta and the dwarf planet Ceres. The Ventura County Star reported Friday on the UCLA Health System's recent expansion efforts, including new clinics in Westlake Village and other areas of the San Fernando, Conejo and Santa Clarita valleys. Dr. Matteo Dinolfo, UCLA professor of medicine and medical director of the new clinics, was quoted.

Dr. Alon Avidan, professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center, was interviewed Monday on NPR's “Morning Edition” about the possible causes of sleepwalking.

Web MD and Heath Day News on Monday highlighted a pediatrics journal editorial co-authored by Arleen A. Leibowitz, professor of public policy at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and a researcher at the UCLA AIDS Institute, recommending that all state Medicaid programs cover male circumcision. Leibowitz was quoted.
 
Is U.S. Having an Apartment Boom?
LA Observed and the Central Valley Business Times reported Monday on a study by UCLA's Ziman Center for Real Estate and the UCLA Anderson Forecast examining the recent boom in construction of new multi-family projects across the country, particularly rental apartments. David Shulman, a senior economist with the Anderson Forecast, was quoted in the coverage.

Drawbacks of All-Nighters, Cramming
Ohio's Columbus Dispatch reported Monday on a study led by Andrew J. Fuligni, professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, showing that cramming for tests and not sleeping enough had a negative effect on high school students' academic performance. Fuligni was quoted.
