For the first time, the expertise and innovative facilities of UCLA's Department of Architecture and Urban Design will be available to the public through a series of hands-on workshops and a seminar this summer.
Ideal for professional architects and designers, as well as students, the program offerings include workshop courses on digital modeling and computer-aided design for beginning, intermediate and advanced designers and a two-part seminar on effective marketing and communications for those who have opened or plan to open their own architecture or design offices.
"Our workshops and seminar offer a fantastic opportunity for individuals to strengthen their skills in architecture and design in this difficult job market," said department chair Hitoshi Abe.
Well known for its cutting-edge digital and fabrication facilities and the rigor and originality of its instruction, the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design has developed one of the most innovative approaches to digital technology in the country. The summer workshops, offered in four different sessions, will focus on three-dimensional modeling software, digital fabrication techniques and portfolio presentation.
The summer seminar, hosted by architectural writer Michael Webb, will feature writers and editors at respected architectural publications, professional architects and architectural photographers, who will offer instruction on effective communication for architecture and design companies — including print and online marketing, promotional photography and brand identity.

The UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design pursues issues confronting contemporary architecture and urbanism through its B.A. program in architectural studies and its four advanced degree programs: the Master of Architecture I and II and the M.A. and Ph.D. in architecture. The programs' primary focus on advanced design is complemented by concentrations in technology and critical studies of architectural culture.
The UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture (UCLA Arts) attracts artists, architects, dancers, designers, musicians and scholars, who draw on the school's unique curriculum, which interweaves work in performance, studio and research studies, providing students with a solid creative, artistic and intellectual foundation, as well as a liberal arts education from one of the country's finest research universities. Students gain a global view of the arts while integrating contemporary practice and theory in their chosen discipline.
