UCLA faculty experts advisory: Supreme Court upholds key part of Arizona immigration law

The high court, while striking down a provision of the law that makes it a crime for undocumented immigrants to work, upheld a provision allowing police officers to check the immigration status of people they stop. UCLA has experts on immigration and the Supreme Court.
 
IMMIGRATION EXPERTS:
 
Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda, an associate professor in UCLA's César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, is a regularly cited expert on immigration and immigrants in the United States. He has written and spoken widely on a variety of immigration-related subjects, including trade, investment and migration between the U.S., Mexico and Latin America; the labor market for Latinos in the U.S.; and international political economy.

Hiroshi Motomura, professor of law, is an expert on immigration and citizenship law. He has written extensively on the subject, served as co-counsel on cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and testified before Congress.

Otto Santa Ana, an associate professor in UCLA's César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, is a sociolinguist who studies how language constructs social hierarchies, particularly regarding Latino communities. He is the co-editor of the 2012 anthology "Arizona Firestorm: Global Immigration Realities, National Media and Provincial Politics," which focused on Arizona's immigration politics.

David Hernández, an assistant professor in UCLA's César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, has studied the history of the detention of immigrants in the United States and how increases in such detentions are linked to the growth of racial inequality and xenophobia. He also researches international migration and Chicano and Latino politics and social movements.

Abel Valenzuela, an associate professor of urban planning and Chicano studies and director of UCLA's Center for the Study of Urban Poverty, is a regularly cited expert on immigration issues and day laborers. Kelly Lytle Hernández, an associate professor of history and associate director of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, is an authority on the history and politics of immigration and emigration, particularly between the United States and Mexico.
