UCLA Headlines July 13, 2012

The Los Angeles Times reports today on a study led by UCLA Anderson Forecast senior economist Jerry Nickelsburg that found that Japan's famous Shinkansen bullet train has had very little effect on economic and urban growth in that country. Nickelsburg is quoted. 

The Ventura County Star and the San Clemente Patch reported Thursday on a study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research estimating the percentage of overweight and obese children in California based on school fitness examinations.

The South Pasadena Patch reported Thursday on a study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research showing that an estimated 3.8 million California adults could not provide adequate food for themselves or their families during the recent recession. Gail Harrison, professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, was quoted.

The Heart reports today on a study led by Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow, UCLA's Eliot Corday Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science and director of the Ahmanson–UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, showing that while stroke patients often get better and faster treatment when paramedics call ahead to notify a hospital they are en route, this only occurs about one-third of the time. Fonarow is quoted. 

 

Spinal News International reported Thursday on UCLA research showing that a diet enriched with a popular omega-3 fatty acid and an ingredient in curry spice helped to preserve walking ability in rats with spinal cord injuries. Study co-authors Dr. Langston Holly, associate professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, professor of neurosurgery at the Geffen School of Medicine and professor of integrative biology and physiology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, were quoted.

 

Flippen, professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was quoted Tuesday in an ABC News.com article about a massive recall of a popular medicine for migraines.

 

Grody, professor of pathology, human genetics and pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was quoted July 5 in an LA Weekly article about two brothers afflicted with a rare genetic muscular disorder. 

 

Hovda, professor of neurosurgery and director of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center, was quoted Thursday in a Los Angeles Times blog article about the planned study of late football star Junior Seau’s brain tissue. He was quoted Wednesday in an Arkansas Times profile of a Hollywood stuntwoman who suffered repeated injuries on the job.

 

Sussman, a lecturer in accounting and real estate at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, was quoted Thursday in a Reuters article about buying and "flipping" foreclosed homes.

 

Whybrow, director of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and physician-in-chief of UCLA's Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, was quoted Thursday in a San Gabriel Valley Tribune column about how people’s addiction to technology can lead to stress and depression.
