UCLA Partnership Aids Wounded Soldiers
The Los Angeles Times reports today on Operation Mend, a collaborative effort between UCLA and a Texas-based military burn center to aid U.S. soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Philanthropist Ronald A. Katz, who initiated the project; Amir Rubin, chief operating officer for the UCLA Hospital System; and Dr. Timothy Miller, chief of reconstructive and plastic surgery at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, are quoted.
 
Financial Crisis and Latin America
Today’s Guatemala Times features a column by Sebastian Edwards, Henry Ford II Professor of International Management at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, about the effect the current global financial crisis is having on the economies of Latin American countries.
 
Extremist Violated Injunction, Judge Says
The entertainment news service TMZ reported Friday that a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge found an anti–animal research extremist in contempt of court for violating an injunction prohibiting the harassment of UCLA researchers. The story was picked up by numerous media outlets.
 
Film Spotlights Shelter for Immigrant Youth
La Opinión reported Saturday on "Casa Libre|Freedom House," a documentary about a shelter in Los Angeles that provides a home for undocumented immigrant youth. The film is a joint project of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center and the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law and was funded by UCLA's Center for Community Partnerships. Roberto Oregel, the film's director and a UCLA alumnus, was quoted.

Dr. Gregg C. Fonarow
Fonarow, UCLA's Eliot Corday Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine and Science and director of the Ahmanson–UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, was quoted Sunday in a Boston Globe article about research suggesting that cholesterol-reducing statin drugs can reduce the incidence of heart attack and stroke in heart disease patients.
 
Dr. Timothy Fong
Fong, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and director of the UCLA Impulse Control Disorders Clinic, is quoted today in a Philadelphia Inquirer op-ed piece about a plan to move a casino from South Philadelphia to the city's Chinatown.

Gilliam, dean of the UCLA School of Public Affairs and a professor of public policy and political science, was quoted Sunday in a San Jose Mercury News article about the effect the election of Barack Obama will have on racial stereotypes.
 
Darnell Hunt
Hunt, professor of sociology and director of UCLA's Bunche Center for African American Studies, is quoted today in a Los Angeles Times article about how African American comedians are approaching the election of Barack Obama in their stand-up routines.
 
Xandra Kayden
