UCLA ranks among nation's top universities in research and development spending
Reinforcing its position as one of the nation's top research universities, UCLA ranked seventh in the nation in research and development spending in the 2010–11 fiscal year, according to a recent survey by the National Center for Science and Engineering.
UCLA spent $937 million, based on data from the National Science Foundation, leading other universities in the top 25 such as Stanford, Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
"Our latest ranking is further evidence of the magnificent intellectual resources and the spirit of innovation that exist across this campus, in every academic discipline," said Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Marcia Smith. "This also speaks to the tremendous infrastructure UCLA has in place — from high-tech laboratory equipment to research administration systems and staff — to support groundbreaking research that gets translated into real-world benefits that improve lives every day."
UCLA consistently ranks among the nation's leaders in competitively awarded grants and contracts to universities. The campus received nearly $1.1 billion in extramural awards during the 2010–11 fiscal year.
UCLA has approximately 6,000 funded research projects underway at any given time and manages more than 1,800 active inventions, including approximately 630 U.S. patents.
About 530 UCLA inventions have been licensed to companies. Using technology developed at UCLA, at least 67 startup companies have been created in the last five years.
