I am a self-professed Olympic junkie
July 29, 2008 | 11:41 AMJulie Chiu
I remember watching Dorothy Hamill win her gold medal and I got a Dorothy Hamill haircut like everyone else. In 1984, I was glued to the TV during summer vacation and watched the Olympics every day.
When I was at UCLA I interned in the Athletic Department and became very proud of UCLA’s excellence in the Olympics sports. Working in the Athletic Department environment, I was inspired to get involved with the Olympics. For the 1996 Olympic Games, I lived in Atlanta for 16 months and worked in Transportation. I coordinated the motor pool of vehicles provided by the sponsors such as GM and BMW. In 2000, I was in Sydney for two months and worked for NBC in transportation.
I especially wanted to be part of these Olympics. It was an opportunity for me to connect with my heritage (I’m Chinese-American) and to live overseas.
I work for Beijing Media Center. We provide studio and office space for international broadcasters. I am the Bookings Manager so I liaise with the broadcasters in getting the resources they need such as satellite transmission, telecommunications, office furnishings, accommodations, etc.
Work has become very busy. I haven’t had a day off in two weeks. A day off is not in sight in the near future. The broadcasters are starting to move in and setting up their studios. My biggest task is now making sure the broadcasters are happy and that we are delivering everything they ordered.About this blog
