Campus fountains vandalized with red dye
Campus maintenance workers discovered this morning that red dye had been put into three campus fountains — the Inverted Fountain, the Macgowan Fountain in the Sculpture Garden, and the Shapiro Fountain near Royce Hall. A vandalism report is being filed with the UCLA Police Department.
Workers were draining, cleaning and refilling the fountains. "It's nothing that can't be fixed," said Nicholas Stone, senior facility planner for north campus operations. "Every year around this time, I expect something will happen."
The big crosstown rivalry game with USC is on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Rose Bowl.
Last year at this time, vandals ripped open a canvas tarpaulin protecting UCLA's iconic "Bruin" statue and splashed the bronze sculpture with red and yellow oil-based paint. This year, added precautions have been taken. A new wooden covering now protects the bear, and 24-hour video surveillance and lighting have been added.
