Artist John Outterbridge to deliver UC Regents Lecture at UCLA

WHAT:
Noted African American artist and community activist John Outterbridge will speak at UCLA as a University of California Regents Lecturer. Regents lecturers are appointed through a UC program designed to bring luminaries from various fields into the classroom environment to interact with students. The event will also feature a special tribute to the late artist Ernie Barnes.
WHEN:
Wednesday, Dec. 2
• 4 p.m.: reception
• 6 p.m.: lecture
WHERE:
The reception will be held in the library and media center of UCLA's Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies (375 Portola Plaza, Haines Hall, Room 135).
The lecture will take place at UCLA's Eli and Edythe Broad Art Center (240 Charles E. Young Dr. North, Room 2160-E).
BACKGROUND:
Outterbridge is known for creating assemblage art, using discarded objects to make sculptures and other art forms. He was the first director of the Watts Tower Art Center and served in that capacity for 17 years. Outterbridge's art has been displayed in numerous museums, including the California African-American Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
