'Right turning' cells create diagonal pattern
Diagonal pattern formed by migrating cells

Cells demonstrating self-organization and left-right asymmetry on a culture surface with alternating strips of cell-adhesive and cell-repellent protein substrates.

When the cells (purple) cross over the alternating horizontal strips, they line up in uniform, diagonal structures, creating an architectural pattern similar to that found in living tissue.
