Statement regarding recent allegations of discrimination

The allegations of reprehensible and derogatory behavior made against UCLA in a recent lawsuit, in a YouTube video and in a change.org petition are of serious concern to the campus community.

The type of behavior alleged is contrary to the values we hold dear and seek to advance, and such behavior would not be tolerated. All claims of discrimination and retaliation are taken very seriously and reviewed thoroughly, including in this case.

While privacy laws and pending litigation prevent us from commenting further on the specifics of the allegations, it is important to emphasize that the complaint contains only allegations, not proven facts.

UCLA has formal grievance and disciplinary procedures that afford appropriate due process review of any complaints of discrimination or mistreatment. Dr. Christian Head and his attorney were repeatedly advised of these procedures and encouraged to utilize them. They chose not to do so.

UCLA works hard to maintain a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment that promotes diversity throughout the student body, faculty, staff and health care enterprise. UCLA also takes all appropriate steps to protect employees from harassment and intimidation. State whistleblower laws prohibit retaliation against employees who express concerns about what they consider to be illegal activity — such as harassment based on race — and university policies embrace these laws.
