UCLA's Academic Advancement Program celebrates 35 years on Feb. 28

WHAT:
The UCLA Academic Advancement Program (AAP), the largest university-based student diversity program in the nation, will celebrate its 35th anniversary by honoring five corporate, civic and community leaders who have championed education access and excellence with its first AAP Leadership Award. The AAP will also recognize 35 UCLA graduates who participated in the program with its first Distinguished Alumni Award.
WHO:
The honorees are:
- Ignatius Bau, program director for the California Endowment; Bau directs the foundation’s program on cultural competency, language access and health workforce diversity.
- Brad Delson, UCLA alumnus, philanthropist, community activist and founding member of the Grammy-winning band Linkin Park.
- Antonia Hernandez, two-time UCLA alumna and president and chief executive officer of the California Community Foundation.

W. Brian Maillian, two-time UCLA alumnus; founder, chair and chief executive officer of Whitestone Capital Group; and an advocate for African American educational opportunities.

Arnold Mitchem, president of the Council for Opportunity in Education, activist for low-income and disabled Americans, and proponent of access to higher education.

35 recipients of the AAP's Distinguished Alumni Award, including state Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), noted Los Angeles attorney and community leader Rickey Ivie, UCLA world arts and cultures professor and Center for Intercultural Performance director Judith Mitoma, and UCLA law professor Devon Carbado.

BACKGROUND:
The AAP supports students whose academic profiles indicate they would benefit from the program; many students come from low-income families, are the first in their family to go to college, are recent immigrants, or are from populations that are underrepresented in higher education.
