UCLA Asian American Studies Center launches collaboration with Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum
WHAT:
UCLA's Asian American Studies Center and the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum will join forces to present "Teaching the Pacific," a daylong event highlighting the living arts of the Pacific Islands. The event will feature hands-on demonstrations by artisans; presentations by UCLA faculty members, graduate students and an acclaimed Pacific Islander artist; and authentic Pacific Islander food vendors, carvers and weavers. For a full schedule, visit http://www.aasc.ucla.edu/default.asp.
"Teaching the Pacific" — which is open to students, educators and the public — marks the launch of the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum's educational programs and the publication of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center's latest issue of the Amerasia Journal, "Transoceanic Flows: Pacific Islander Interventions Across the American Empire."
The event is co-sponsored by Alessandro Duranti, dean of the social sciences division in UCLA's College of Letters and Science; Transitions Optical; the UCLA International Institute; the UCLA Department of English; the UCLA American Indian Studies Center; UCLA's Academic Advancement Program; and the UCLA Department of Urban Planning at the Luskin School of Public Affairs.
