UCLA Department of Music announces fall 2012 events

The UCLA Department of Music offers a variety of events for the public's enjoyment this fall. Programs include faculty and student recitals and performances of high artistic accomplishment in various genres, as well as visiting artists of national and international renown.

For ticketed events, contact the UCLA Central Ticket Office at 310-825-2101 or www.tickets.ucla.edu. Campus parking is available for $11 (all-day); short-term parking is also available (payable at pay stations). For events at Schoenberg Hall, park in Lot 2 (enter the campus at Hilgard and Westholme avenues), and for events at Royce Hall, park in Lot 4 (enter the campus at Sunset Boulevard and Westwood Plaza).

Faculty Recital
James Miller, trombone

James Miller, trombonist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and a UCLA professor of trombone, will present a recital in collaboration with pianist Kanae Matsumoto. Miller will feature his own compositions for electronics and instruments, as well as other virtuosic works for the trombone, in a multimedia-filled evening.

UCLA Philharmonia continues the Eric Zeisl recording project with performances of "Little Symphony" and "November." The program also includes Gioacchino Rossini's Overture to "Semiramide" and Dmitri Shostakovich's teenage masterpiece, Symphony No. 1 in F minor, Op. 10.

Under the direction of Larry Sutherland, the UCLA Wind Ensemble will perform David Maslanka's "Tears"; Oliver Waespi's Suite No. 1 for wind ensemble; Charles Ives' "Tryptich"; Joaquin Turina's "La procession du Rocio"; and Yasuhide Ito's "Gloriosa." Sutherland served as director of bands and professor of music at California State University, Fresno, from 1969 to 2006. He is currently an adjudicator for World Projects Productions in England, Australia and the United States and is the artistic director for World Projects' International Band and Orchestra Festivals at Carnegie Hall and Disney Hall.

Salome in Opera and on Film

Inspired by the multifaceted tale of the biblical figure Salome, this music and cinema event presents works ranging from the avant garde to high camp and from the scandalous to the sublime. This work is done in conjunction with the Hammer's exhibition "A Strange Magic: Gustave Moreau's Salome."

UCLA Philharmonia presents a showcase of orchestral color featuring UCLA faculty clarinetist Gary Gray. The program includes Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 99 in E-flat major; Aaron Copland's "Clarinet Concerto"; Alberto E. Ginastera's "Panambi" Suite, Op. 1a; and Richard Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Op. 28.
